There apparently is nothing like homegrown for University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletics.
After hiring former UTC football and baseball player Russ Huesman as head football coach, athletic director Rick Hart officially announced Saturday that he had hired Heath Eslinger, another former Moc, to take charge of the school’s wrestling program.
Eslinger was the choice from more than two dozen applicants, some of them already Division I head coaches.
“People like the fact that he is an alum,” Hart said. “People commented to me that they have been impressed with Russ Huesman and the impact he’s had, and they have drawn comparisons. You’re not going to see us hiring an alum every time a job comes open. That wasn’t our goal, but just like the football search, at the end of the day Heath was the best fit.”
authentic Albert Pujols jersey Grey /> A three-time NCAA qualifier and former Southern Conference outstanding wrestler, Eslinger held the school’s career wins authentic Rod Carew jersey Blue record (120-18) until 2007, when it was broken by Michael Keefe (134-40). He also spent three years with the Mocs as an assistant under Terry Brands.
In high school, Eslinger helped Bradley Central win its first two state titles, and he won a state tournament best-wrestler award. He has been a successful head coach at Cleveland High the past three seasons.
“I’m just an ordinary guy at an ordinary place hoping to do extraordinary things,” he said at his introduction to a filled Hall of Fame room at UTC’s McKenzie Arena.
“When we talked about our mission and our values, Heath was very much in step with that,” Hart said.
Ooltewah 171-pounder Jake Young was recruited to UTC by Chris Bono, who announced in June that he was returning to Iowa State to be assistant head coach, but the change didn’t deter the enthusiasm of Tim Young, Jake’s father.
“I was a Bono fan but I’m authentic Tony Oliva jersey Blue a bigger Eslinger fan,” the elder Young said. “He’s the complete package. He cares about the kids and he’ll make sure they care about each other. They may not like but they’re sure going to respect him.
“He’s a student of the sport. He knows the ins and outs of techniques. He’ll Customized Cardinals Jersey have to wear a lot of hats, but I think he’ll be a magnet (for wrestlers) because of his personality.”
When he decided to apply for the job, Eslinger made a list of more than two dozen possible assistant coaches and another of more than 140 recruits. He made no announcements Saturday about his staff but said he would be delighted if they knew more than he did.
“I’d like to think I can hire two or three people better than me,” he said. “I want coaches. I want guys who will complement my weaknesses and energize my strengths. One of the things I love to do is put together a staff that complements each other, and I’ll make sure we do that.”
Even before his hiring had been announced, Eslinger was calling the authentic Albert Pujols jersey Blue UTC wrestlers and creating Rod Carew official jersey a workout schedule.
“March comes all too quickly, and we can’t wait until November to start training,” he Customized St. Louis Cardinals Jersey said.
The Mocs return nine of 10 starters from the 2008-09 team that won the school’s fifth straight Southern Conference championship.
“The kids know me and I know them,” Eslinger said. “We have a good group coming back. There are several All-America candidates on the team right now, and there is a roomful of tough kids.”
He also plans to add to that combination and believes he can do it by recruiting nationally on occasion but depending heavily on Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
“We’ll get some national recruits, but I believe wrestling in the Southeast has gotten better,” Eslinger said. “You take a football player that runs a 5.0 40 (yard dash); you can’t make him 4.5 overnight. You can take a pretty good wrestler that’s willing to work and make him better.”
A former student pastor, Eslinger has been very involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and received both leadership and influence awards from that organization. He also is a noted speaker and clinician.
